Mzuzu Stadium Closed for Renovation After Kamuzu Day Celebrations

The Mzuzu City Council has issued a statement indicating the closure of Mzuzu Stadium, home ground of Moyale Baracks and Mzuzu City Hammers, for renovation. The stadium is expected to reopen next month, June,2025.

The closure of Mzuzu Stadium comes in following the commemoration of Kamuzu Day event which took place on 14th May,2024 where His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera was the guest of honor.

Kamuzu Day is a public holiday in Malawi, observed on May 14th. If May 14th falls on a weekend, the following Monday is declared a public holiday. This day commemorates Malawi’s first president, Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda.

Kamuzu Banda was born near Kasungu in Malawi. it is believed that he was born in March or April 1898 but his actual date of birth is unknown since there were no birth registrations  during his time. May 14th was chosen as his official birthday.

Kamuzu Banda returned  home (then British Nyasaland) after receiving his education abroad to fight against colonialism and advocate independence.

Banda was formally appointed as prime minister of Nyasaland in 1963 and led the country to independence on July 6th 1964. He chose the name Malawi for the fledgling nation,  after the Maravi, an old name of the Nyanja people that inhabit the area.

The theme of this year’s event was “Kamuzu: The Benchmark of Servant Leadership, Uniting Malawians and Prospering Together”.

The celebrations were held amid economic hardships coupled with shortage of fuel, foreign exchange, high cost of living among other challenges that Malawians are facing.
