MDF Invades MCP Gang Leader Munlo’s Mchesi Residence; recovered Panga Knives and Firearms
In a significant security operation, Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers conducted a raid on the compound of MCP-affiliated gang leader Munlo in Mchesi township. According to eyewitness accounts, heavily armed troops apprehended several gang members found in possession of firearms and machetes a couple of days ago.
The operation reportedly targeted a group believed to be preparing to launch attacks against opposition supporters in Lilongwe. A senior MDF officer confirmed the arrests and stated that detainees were being transported to Kamuzu Barracks for processing.
The primary target, gang leader Munlo, was not present during the operation, prompting security forces to initiate a manhunt to locate him. This development occurs as Malawians conclude voting in a tightly contested presidential election widely seen as a referendum on President Lazarus Chakwera’s first term.
The election takes place amid severe economic challenges, including inflation exceeding 33% for three years, widespread poverty affecting 70% of the population and critical fuel and forex shortages.
