Plot to Grab Power By Outgoing MCP Uncovered
As the nation was waiting for the final results of Last Tuesday’s general election, 5 days into vote counting, unofficial results put the Democratic Progressive Party president Prof Arthur Peter Mutharika in a strong commanding lead defying poll results carried out recently by different institutions.
Although Peter Mutharika’s victory was widely expected but the margin has surprised many, DPP has done exceedingly well even making inroads in what used to be known as ruling Malawi Congress Party strongholds.
So far, the leading candidate, fondly called “Adad” by DPP supporters has not addressed the nation, he has remained calm and patient, while the outgoing ruling party has been desperately holding media briefings where among other things, they hinted on lodging complaints to Malawi Electoral Commission alleging vote rigging by the opposition.
But when releasing partial results, MEC said no party had officially submitted its complaints and the figures showed Mutharika leading.
On its 10th update on receipt of 2025 general election results which the electoral body gave on Saturday evening, 20 September 2025, the commission said it is on high alert and expressed its determination to deliver credible elections by respecting the will of the people.
There have also been some stories of alleged vote rigging and the Malawi police announced it had arrested eight suspects for election fraud but did not give more details or identities.
The alleged fraud happened in Lilongwe which is Malawi Congress Party strongholds raising suspicion that the suspects, who are mec officers, were involved in this malpractice to help the ruling party.
Some opposition parties have conceded defeat including former governing People’s Party. Meanwhile according to DPP Publicity Secretary Hon. Shadrick Namalomba, President Elect, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika will be sworn in on Saturday at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
