Education authorities launches End Learning for All in Africa Campaign

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education is set to launch the “End Learning Poverty for All in Africa” Campaign tomorrow, Friday in Lilongwe.

This initiative aims to raise awareness among all stakeholders about the critical importance of enhancing learning outcomes for students, particularly in the early grades.

In a statement, Dr. Rachel Chimbwete Phiri, Secretary for Basic and Secondary Education, has emphasized that Malawi, like many other African nations, is urging all stakeholders to take action to improve learning outcomes for young learners in primary education.

She says, Malawi is a signatory to a communiqué from the African Union Conference on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy held in September 2024, where member states pledged to combat the issue of “learning poverty,” which includes low levels of foundational literacy and numeracy skills experienced throughout the continent.

The theme of the campaign, “Can Read, Can Write, Can Count: Foundation4Life,” depicts the necessity of providing quality education and fostering literacy and numeracy skills as essential components of lifelong learning and development for the children.

The launch event will convene stakeholders from the education sector, government officials, development partners, and civil society organizations, all committed to improving learning outcomes and reducing learning poverty in Malawi.

The event will take place at Mkwichi Secondary School in Lilongwe, under the theme “Can Read, Can Write, Can Count: Foundation4Life.”
