ENERGY MINISISTER MATOLA IN RSA; calls energy key to economic growth

Energy Minisister, Ibrahim Matola, has championed the country’s hydropower vision at the Africa Energy Forum in Cape Town.
Addressing a high-level ministerial panel on hydropower development, Matola highlighted Malawi’s ambitious energy transformation agenda to over 6,000 energy professionals and ministers from across Africa.
Emphasizing the significance of the 358.5-megawatt Mpatamanga Hydropower Storage Project, which recently secured $350 million in World Bank financing, Matola stated that the project is a top priority for the government.
He added that the project will supply electricity to over a million new households, create thousands of job opportunities, and generate 1,544 gigawatt-hours of clean energy annually.
Matola then called for stronger regional cooperation in hydropower development, stressing that Africa’s energy challenges require continental solutions.
- The Minister also emphasized the need for innovative financing mechanisms, technology transfer, and local capacity building to unlock Africa’s vast hydropower potential.
