Beauty Pageants Key to Social Transformation and National Development – Chihana
Tadala Hannah Chihana, spouse to the Second Vice President Enock Kanzingeni Chihana, has underscored the critical role of the creative arts industry—particularly beauty pageants—in addressing social challenges, promoting national identity, and driving economic growth.
She made the remarks last night at BICC in Lilongwe during the prestigious Miss Malawi Beauty Pageant, where she attended as Guest of Honour. In her address, Chihana said beauty pageants play a vital role in shaping the country’s identity by instilling values, pride, and national aspirations in line with President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s vision of national renewal.
“Ladies and gentlemen, this pageant is therefore more than a competition. It is a platform for human capital development—a space where young women gain confidence, leadership skills, networks, and the courage to dream boldly. It prepares them not just to walk on a stage, but to walk into boardrooms, institutions, advocacy spaces, and national conversations, ready to contribute meaningfully,” said Chihana.
She added: “Tonight, we celebrate more than crowns and sashes; we celebrate ambition, purpose, and the unstoppable spirit of the Malawian girl.” Chihana further emphasized that true beauty goes beyond physical appearance, noting that meaningful beauty is reflected in integrity, character, compassion, and commitment to service, particularly towards the less privileged in society.
She therefore urged the contestants to use their platforms to champion positive social change, promote economic growth, advocate for youth and women empowerment, and foster national unity, reminding them that they now serve as national flag bearers and brand ambassadors.
At the event, Thandie Chisi, a graduate of the University of Malawi, was crowned Miss Malawi, beating nine other contestants. Her first and second runners-up were Ireen Navicha and Tina Mkombezi, respectively.
In her acceptance remarks, Chisi reaffirmed her commitment to championing the rights of the less privileged and serving as a beacon of hope to girls across the country.
The colorful ceremony was attended by several Cabinet ministers, including Minister of Justice Charles Mhango, Mary Thom Navicha, Mary Chilima, and other distinguished guests.
