Parliament Unanimously Confirms Richard Luhanga as New Inspector General of Police

The National Assembly of Malawi has today unanimously confirmed Mr. Richard Luhanga as the new Inspector General (IG) of the Malawi Police Service (MPS), following his nomination by His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi.

Mr. Luhanga, a seasoned police officer and administrator, was approved after a smooth vetting process in Parliament, with members from both sides of the House expressing confidence in his leadership, professionalism, and integrity.

Luhanga holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and Biology from the University of Malawi (Chancellor College) and a Master’s Degree in Strategic Management. His academic background, coupled with years of public service experience, is expected to strengthen the Police Service’s operational strategy and administrative effectiveness.

He is also known for having undergone several specialized trainings in security management, crime prevention, and organizational leadership, both locally and abroad.

Before his appointment as Inspector General, Mr. Luhanga served in various senior positions within the Malawi Police Service, where he earned a reputation for discipline, professionalism, and commitment to reforms.

He has previously served in administrative, investigative, and operational divisions, contributing to crime reduction strategies and modernization of police operations.

Colleagues describe him as a “strategic thinker with a calm but firm leadership style” — qualities many say are crucial at a time when the country faces complex security challenges, including organized crime, corruption, and cyber threats.

During the confirmation session, lawmakers from both the government and opposition benches commended the choice, citing his track record and leadership qualities.

The Speaker of Parliament, in announcing the decision, noted that the approval was “unanimous,” reflecting cross-party confidence in Mr. Luhanga’s ability to lead the Police Service professionally and without bias.

Several MPs urged the new IG to prioritize discipline within the force, protection of human rights, and restoration of public trust in law enforcement.

Analysts and civil society groups have welcomed the appointment, urging Mr. Luhanga to focus on strengthening community policing and citizen engagement, combating police corruption and abuse of power, enhancing investigative capacity to handle rising cases of financial and cybercrime and improving officer welfare and professionalism within the service.
