Steven Maseya Refutes Allegations of Operating ‘Leah Mbughi’ Facebook Page

For a long time, there has been widespread speculation that a renowned TV personality Steven Maseya, founder and Chief Editor of Online Newspaper called Khulubvi Post operates under the name Leah Mbughi Page on Facebook.

He would therefore like to state categorically and without any ambiguity that Steven Maseya is not Leah Mbughi, nor has he ever used that name in any form -online or otherwise.

During the previous MCP regime, some party operatives confronted him claiming that he was hiding behind this Facebook page. He ignored these accusations at the time, believing the truth would eventually prevail.

However, we have now realized that continued silence may expose him to harm from misguided individuals who genuinely believe a false narrative. We witnessed, with our own eyes, discussions in MCP WhatsApp groups where comments posted by the Facebook character “Leah Mbughi” were attributed to Steven Maseya. These claims were not only false but also malicious.

“On 11 November 2021, when I was arrested on the basis of this same false identify, I was suspected and accused of being Leah Mbughi and of allegedly posting Fake MANEB examination papers.

The police downloaded those materials themselves and wrongfully attached them to his name (Steven Maseya), despite the fact that he never operated under any alias.” Maseya narrated.

More recently, in October this year, one Maseya received calls from individuals seeking to verify whether he was the one writing about matters relating to the NFRS and alleged misuse of the office. Again, the story was published by the Facebook account “Leah Mbughi” and yet he was wrongly suspected.

These incidents demonstrate how dangerous misinformation can put innocent people into danger or can easily be mistreated or targeted for things they have absolutely nothing to do with. History is full of examples of people suffering because of false accusations, and he refuses to allow that to happen to him.

Therefore, let it be known that Steven Maseya, is not Leah Mbughi and he has never subscribed to that name, and that Facebook account doesn’t belong to him. Maseya expresses his political opinions openly, without hiding his identify, fear, or prejudice. Maseya can be held accountable only for what he says publicly and openly -nothing else.

According to Maseya, during his arrest by MCP regime, the police at Lumbadzi confiscated all his phones. However, to their surprise, the Facebook account belonging to “Leah Mbughi” continued posting stories while he was in custody and completely cut off from devices.

This was a turning point. It was at that moment that some members of the MCP finally realized that the real Leah Mbughi was someone else entirely—and certainly not Steven Maseya.

Maseya is appealing to everyone who has believed or promoted the lie that he is behind the Leah Mbughi Facebook account to please stop spreading this misinformation. It is untrue, unfounded, and dangerous.

MEC Chair Receives EU Final Election Observation Report, Pledges Reforms and Continued Engagement

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, on Tuesday formally received the final report of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) to the 2025 Malawi General Election, describing the document as a vital tool for reflection, accountability and continuous improvement of the country’s electoral processes. Speaking during the official handover ceremony in Lilongwe, Justice Mtalimanja thanked the EU for honouring Malawi’s invitation to observe the September 16, 2025 General Election and for returning to present its findings in person. “Your presence was not only welcome but also highly valued,” said Mtalimanja, noting that while several international observers were invited, some failed to attend. She said the EU’s engagement symbolised respect, partnership and a shared commitment to strengthening democracy in Malawi. The EU EOM was led by Chief Observer Lucia Annunziata, a Member of the European Parliament, and attended by European Union Ambassador to Malawi, His Excellency Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi, MEC commissioners, senior MEC officials, and members of the EU delegation. Justice Mtalimanja praised the EU as a longstanding and reliable partner to Malawi’s democratic institutions, highlighting the impact of past EU observer recommendations in shaping legal reforms, policy discussions and administrative improvements in election management. She also expressed gratitude for the EU’s financial contribution to the election basket fund through the Malawi Elections Support Programme (MESP), coordinated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). According to the MEC Chairperson, the support—together with substantial funding from the Malawi Government—was critical in ensuring that the 2025 General Election was professionally managed, transparent and inclusive. “The EU has supported us not only as an observer but also as a development partner, particularly in electoral matters,” she said. Justice Mtalimanja emphasised that the presentation of the EU’s final report was not a mere formality but a substantive step towards improving future elections. She said election observation provides independent assessment, helps build public confidence and plays a role in conflict prevention by reducing speculation, misinformation and mistrust. “As an Election Management Body, we do not view observer reports as criticism or external imposition, but as invaluable resources from experts who have a genuine interest in Malawi’s democratic progress,” she stated. She confirmed that MEC will carefully study the EU EOM recommendations alongside reports from other domestic and international observers as part of its post-election review. The Commission, she said, will adopt a holistic approach to identify strengths, address weaknesses and consider innovations ahead of future elections. Justice Mtalimanja further underscored that strengthening electoral processes must be continuous, not limited to election periods. She called for structured and sustained dialogue between MEC and the European Union to ensure that recommendations are translated into practical and timely reforms. In her concluding remarks, the MEC Chairperson commended MEC commissioners, permanent and temporary staff for delivering what she described as free, fair and credible elections despite tight deadlines, intense scrutiny and widespread misinformation. She also applauded Malawians for maintaining peace before, during and after polling and the announcement of results. “Together, we demonstrated that it is possible to deliver credible elections while preserving peace and the sanctity of life,” she said. Justice Mtalimanja concluded by reaffirming MEC’s appreciation of the EU’s professionalism and partnership, stating that the Commission will reflect thoroughly on the recommendations before issuing detailed responses. “We value and welcome your recommendations, and we thank you once again for your commitment to supporting credible elections in Malawi,” she said.

Africa–EU Summit Opens in Luanda With Strong Call for Peace, Partnership, and Shared Prosperity

The 7th African Union–European Union (AU–EU) Summit has officially opened in Luanda, Angola, setting a renewed tone of cooperation, stability, and joint development between the two continents. President Peter Mutharika Hails Malawi Defence Force For Professionalism, Discipline

His Excellency the State President, Prof Arthur Peter Mutharika, Commander – In-Chief of the Malawi Defence Force, has commended the country’s men and women in uniform for their discipline and professionalism when discharging their duties both at home and abroad. The Malawi leader made the remarks on Friday, 28 November 2025, at Malawi Armed Forces College MAFCO in Salima after commissioning 122 officer cadets following their outstanding performance during their 18 months rigorous training period “As a Malawian, I am proud of you for the professionalism when carrying out peace keeping operations on the global arena” said the president President Mutharika also underscored the need for military co-operation among countries in the southern Africa region inorder to strengthen peace and stability in the region. Mutharika also hailed the good relationship between soldiers of the Malawi Defence Force and the civilian population which is a model in Africa. Among the 122 cadets, some are female soldiers and even Tanzanians also took part in the training

Former Thyolo DC Hudson Kuphanga Bids Farewell as Government Appoints Noel Dakamau as New District Commissioner

Former Thyolo District Commissioner (DC) Hudson Kuphanga has officially bid farewell to the Thyolo District Executive Committee following government’s announcement that Noel Dakamau is the new DC for the district. However, Kuphanga told the committee that he has not yet been informed about his next deployment or the position he is expected to take up within government. He further revealed that government has appointed Willard Mwambo as the new Director of Administration for Thyolo District Council, replacing Elestina M’mame, who has been reassigned to serve as the District Commissioner for Chiradzulu. Speaking during the farewell session, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kapichi expressed mixed feelings, saying that although the community is saddened by Kuphanga’s departure, they remain grateful for his dedicated service. “We are disappointed to see Mr. Kuphanga leaving Thyolo, but at the same time we are happy because he has served this district very well during the two years he has been with us,” T/A Kapichi said.
